Vanuatu Diving

Vanuatu diving has two main benefits. They are the wide range of dive sites and great diving services.

Vanuatu Scuba diving is excellent, for the dive sites themselves, accessibility, water temperature and visibility. There are a number of professional Padi certified dive operators – we recommend Peter and Leanne at Nautilus (up the hill from the Waterfront Bar & Grill) or Maggie from Big Blue at the Number One café for diving from the heart of Port Vila.

There is also some other tours that run day trips out of Port Vila that have dive operations as well, these being Tranquility Dive and Golden Wing Charters. All these operators offer great diving and service with some also have accommodation as well. Most can pick you up in Port Vila and drop you back. If you Google any of these operators you will find their details.

If you want to experience Vanuatu diving at the extremes you need to dive the President Coolidge. You would contact Allan Power Dive, Aqua Marine and Santo Island Dive & Fishing on Santo.

Vanuatu is a great place for an introductory dive – just have a free go in the pool to see if you are comfortable with the basic skills and then it’s a short boat ride to one of the dive sites. One opf the many sites used for such activities is the Twin Bommies; there are two ‘bombora’ formations and a sheer wall on this dive. The grottos and coral are alive with a variety of welcoming fish.  This is ten meters on top of the reef to 18 meters over the drop-off. Lots of fish are there with varying size and color.

Another great spot when you are in Vanuatu diving is Mele reef that rises up in the middle of the Bay to around 6 meters from the surface. There are lots of dives around here – a good one is along a vertical wall to a shallow reef to finish. It’s a marine sanctuary in the area of Hideaway Island so the wildlife is protected and abundant.

When you come to Vanuatu Diving another must do is the Cathedral which is another great dive at Pango Point with shafts of light creates unusual effects. You can swim through to the back and up a ‘chimney’ to a large pool on the surface inside the reef – then back to the outside and along the wall to explore and look out into the deep open ocean.

If you have friend or family that comes with you while you are in Vanuatu diving and they are non divers most resorts have snorkeling gear available and there are lots of snorkeling tours and excursions. Snorkeling can be done just about anywhere and on all the islands – but you may have to bring your own gear if you are headed for remote areas.
